My shopping news radar must have been off…or perhaps L.A. is too far away for me to gauge what is going on over there.  But thankfully, I’m a stats nerd and found that Space 15 Twenty had linked to me.  Sick of all the names involving clever (or not…) wordplays with numbers?  15 Twenty refers to the street number 1520, on N. Cahuenga Blvd and is in a nutshell, a ‘concept shopping mall’ owned by Urban Outfitters.  After a bit of research, seems there has been a lot of hype about it over on LA.Racked.  Which then made me think we need a London equivalent of Racked.com to drum up similar excitement about London retail ventures and then my trail of thought landed on glumly Westfield.  The gigantic mall that has landed in Shepherds.  A.K.A. The Last Place on Earth Where I Would Go To Shop.

1520_pr09

Going back to UO’s Space 15 Twenty, the idea is that Urban Outfitters sits side by side next to specially picked out vendors, complimenting them and creating a space that I suppose is unashmedly contrived.  You have Free People, What Comes Around Goes Around, indie bookstore and gallery space TV Books, arts and architecture bookstore Hennessy and Ingalls and to round it off, a streetwear element from Alife.  In addition, to distinguish the UO store from other ones, they have set up a pop-up store space that is currently playing host to Samantha Pleet

Space1520

Yes, ok, so it’s a mall owned by a multi-national chain with oodles of money and clever marketing but I think the concept is an admirable one – like fantasy high streets where you dream up of all your favourite stores to your taste bunged onto one street; this kind of curated concept mall is catering to a very specific customer.  The aesthetics and the contents have been carefully considered to appeal to that customer; it isn’t standard mall affair and things like photobooths people to play with, galleries, in-store band/DJ events and all things lo-fi only serve to create that desired ‘look’.  I’m not saying the way to my heart is through exposed brick and staff wearing vintage t-shirts… but I do know that specific shopping environments make the shopping experience far more pleasant for me.

I also think with different twists and with different stores, this is something that can translate very well in other cities.  Kingly Court, a semi-outdoors mall on Carnaby Street is of this ‘curated mall’ ilk but with the addition of other elements other than fashion stores, some very clever shopping one-stop-drops could exist, that don’t resemble Westfield…

I’m not a mall person at all so I really can’t say anything without being extremely prejudiced.

  2. keira says:

But it’s a digital photo booth… every mall in my city has one of those and they suck.

  3. susie_bubble says:

Keira: Ah sorry…must be a US thing…. we have passport photos machines but they don’t look like that and the pics don’t come out looking like that and they don’t come as standard in our malls….
Judging from their Flickr page, I thought it was some aesthetically-enhancing purposely installed bit of of kit…

    Hi Susie,
I’d like to submit my link at http://www.astridland.blogspot.com
Though I am based in NYC, I found out about the Angels sale through you and will be eternally grateful for the chance to score some beautiful vintage pieces.
    Thanks and cheers!

i so prefer places with character to gigantic malls that shout out “i’ll swallow u along with ur wallet”. kingly court is one sweet little place! is “our shop” still on the second floor? haven;t been there in aaages…

  8. danz says:

“…I do know that specific shopping environments make the shopping experience far more pleasant for me.”
Totally agree. I wish more shop owners would realize that it’s not only about the clothes but about the entire shopping experience.
Also, I’m not sure if you noticed but I sent an email with an illustration I did of you. Just want to make sure that you received it. Take care :)

  9. MizzJ says:

A mall for hipsters is still a mall, so there’s no point in thinking it’s any different haha. It’s an interesting and rather brilliant idea on UO’s part to create a mall for themselves and choosing their own competitors! I’m not sure if I’d like malls that tailor to specific “styles” b/c who only dresses in 1 style really? Then you’d just have to visit multiple malls to get all the things you need!

  10. Songy says:

I suppose this isn’t anything new. For a smaller scale thing, Colette in Paris comes to mind. I’m sure there are plenty of malls like that in Seoul.

  11. This sounds interesting, but it looks like you only get one style of clothes. One of the things I like about malls is when I go in a big group and we can all split off to our favorite stores.

  12. a concept mall seems like a great retailing idea in today’s economy.
–on a side note; i’m a complete stats nerd too! i love to see how people find the site :)

  13. sounds like an interesting retailing technique! one stop shopping for the hipster crowd.
–on a side note; i’m also a stats nerd! i love finding out about how people find my site!:)

  14. Nadia says:

Susie, you are the only the saving grace. Do you know how do i go about on getting design related jobs. With the recession and stuff it makes it harder for me to penetrate the fashion industry. I saw a job opening at Donna Karen and Vans, What do you think? Any advice? The site is http://jobstaxi.com

  15. Saskia says:

i think the point is to find a place/street/mall that goes beyond the usual stores that you find there (h&m, drugstores – every high street in every country looks quite the same, right?). a place which reflects the city’s uniqueness, it’s designers, creatives etc. in Germany there is the word “Lokalcolorit”, meaning a street is coloured by its local creatives and specialties.

  16. Chantel Clarijs says:

    Hey susie
I completely agree about the experience aspect of shops/malls. For me that is one of the most important things ever.It is usually the atmosphere, look, experience that attracts me and then obviously make me go back to a shop, gallery, coffeeshope..ect.
I am from Cape Town, South Africa, and even though there is very little of them and you have to look really hard….we have a lot of good quality little shops that takes you into a completely different world and headspace. I love it.
I find it really hard to njoy myself in a blant space.
A FANTASY MALL WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE
    love.
    Chantel

  17. Malls get a bad rap, yeah there polluted with teenagers, elderly and disgruntled, underpaid retail workers, but they’re not as horrible as they sound; unless they’re crowded and then all bets are off…
This Space 15 Twenty sounds interesting and I would love to have a mall that catered to one aesthetic, instead of a hodge podge of stores. It’s funny cause UO has a headquarters here in Philly. I would love to see something like this here.
Ok I’m done rambling… hey Susie!

  18. kim says:

I agree with some of the other comments above, the concept is nice but having the place cater only one style, I would have to go to other places too. I live near one of the very few malls in Belgium. In the weekend it’s utter hell, but during the week I like to pop in about an hour before closing time as the other shoppers are already leaving, then I have the place almost to myself, which is peachy.

  19. susie_bubble says:

I guess what I’m saying is I would personally prefer a more specific mall… if I know what I’m into then going to one place and getting something that I’m into… kind of like a personalised/custom shopping mall…
I’m not really into big malls I guess so alternatives are most welcome for me…
Saskia, I think that’s what I have in mind… something unique to that location…not saying this Space 15 Twenty is IT, but I do think they’re onto something….
    Anyhow…just throwing out ideas about…the usual non-consequential drivel…
    Astrid: Will link to you.
Alecca: I don’t think that shop exists anymore…
Songy: colette is more like a concept store as opposed to mall though…. that’s a different kettle of fish…guess I’m just interested in new retail concepts….
Nadia: Hmmm… you’ve left a few comments with that website at the end of it…. a bit confused really? Anyhow I think i’m ill equipped to give advice about jobs in design seeing as I don’t work in that sector…I actually think the recession will give birth to greater creativity… it’s just a storm to ride out…
Kim: There ARE no quiet times in shopping malls in London…. at least not quiet enough for me…

  20. Catheryn says:

I live in LA and haven’t yet visited 1520 but I would say it’s the closest thing we will ever get to say the Stables in Camden. LA is not a really a shopping mecca for the non-mall rats of the world. They have no concept of a “market” like Europe or even New York has. Sure we have “flea markets” such as the Rose Bowl and Melrose Fairfax but usually these are just overpriced crafty type stalls.
As to Westfield London, I will still continue to hit Oxford Street instead. Something about all those shops enclosed in one area kind of takes the fun out of shopping especially during the post holiday sales.

  21. heidi says:

Why are people so quick to bash something unfamiliar or created by a “chain”. Unlike the other commentors, I HAVE personally visited Space 1520. The layout of the space is inviting and I’ll take exposed beams, bricks and hardwood floors over the traditional “mall” anyday. This Urban Outfitters carries more variety than other stores I’ve been to and they even throw in vintage pieces here and there. I’m all for companies trying something new and props to a “chain” for taking a chance on something different.

  22. tagintora says:
