>>By posting this new A/W 09 collection by Vanessa da Silva, I'm completely contradicting an excerpt I read by Fran Lebowitz in this vintage book I picked up over the weekend called 'Cheap Chic' where she condemns slogan tees or gimmicks of any sort in Interview magazine twenty plus years ago...
"While clothes with pictures and/or writing on them are not entirely an invention of the modern age, they are an unpleasant indication of the general state of things, which encourages people to express themselves through their clothing... I mean, be realistic. If people don't want to listen to you, what makes you think they want to hear from your sweater?"
Sadly, I don't have a voice as powerful as Ms. Lebowitz's so I'm happy to resort to more literal if banal statements such as these tees from Vanessa's I Heart London collection which I saw at a press day a few months back. I'm also willing to declare my love for the Big Smoke even more strongly today having returned from a family meal where the parents have pleaded me to have a back-up city to work in after London and Hong Kong.... to which I replied... "I have no other place to go though...".

That first top is absolutely stunning!

adorable! The last one's definitely my favorite.

i like the first one, but i'm not fond of the hanging tassels(?) at the bottom of the shirt..and i love the rest of them as well

Oh I actually still agree with Lebowitz. However, that does not mean I don't wear 'statement' shirts because, after all, my inner being is a pure hypocrite. That said, I don't think you can see these as statement shirts. I see this as a parody or creative rework of tourist shirts. So love away! =D

Ahh...all of these give me such good ideas. I want all of them.

These are not your everyday slogan tees. Wonderful.

I love clothes with print, but sadly enough I have never been to London! This Tee's are absolutely fantastic though. The first is def my favourite, because it has something special and different about it.

Amazing style! I love the cut-outs in the back of the first top.

nothing against "banal statements"! hihihi

Oh I love London but I heart not the slogan of NYC origin - I just wish it would stay in NY. We need a new slogan for London - what's wrong with stating your cause!

Amazing! Especially the 1st & last one! I 'heart' London too! :)

I just love the collection. Every item has its own detail which gave the simple "I love London" tees some kick. My favorite is the 1st one.

I think most of us don't have voices as powerful as Ms. Lebowitz - and anyway, I love slogan tees - it's not just about the message, typography is design too!
By the way, Hong Kong's jumped on the slogan/design t-shirt bandwagon too: http://de-vote.com

The first one is really cool!
Why would you need a back up city to work in, is it in case London and HK flooded or something?! ;)
Posted by: missmilki | 06 July 2009 at 11:14
Missmilki: My parents have an obsession with 'back-up' plans.... they think to extremes.... they reckon London's time is up and it's not all it's cracked up to be....
Posted by: susie_bubble | 06 July 2009 at 11:19
Sure you do, Antwerp is very willing to have you :) (though I admit were probably a bit to small townish compared to London or HK...)

Oh Susie B what can your parents mean fearing this town of ours is game over'd? Take 'em over to the Museum of London next year, (when the new Galleries of Modern London open) and show 'em why we love this dirty city of ours x x x

i disagree with with ms lebowitz but i love to hear what she has to say. and have to point at that, though lacking in text, her clothes certainly make a statement!
