Some of you may have read about Cynthia Rowley's interesting reaction to our rabid hunger for instant blogs, streams, TwitPics and Style.com images that have seeped into our habits of looking at shows. Instant pre-orders on A/W 10-11 have already been tried and tested with a few collections (oh woe is me for being a bag hag – I heart the Proenza Schouler A/W 10 PS1 muchy muchy… not that a ticking countdown on online pre-orders is going to make me any more richer in resources to buy it). However Cynthia Rowley took a different approach by turning those instantaneous images that we get into actual garments that are now available at the Gagosian Gallery. Front and back(guess someone heard my pleas over lack of BACK view images) photographs of several ensembles from her A/W 10-11 collection have been reprinted on jersey dresses. More interestingly they're also selling the uncut fabric bolts with these prints on for you to form your own dress with them as well as sewing kits with Cynthia Rowley labels ready for you to knock off. I'm not sure whether this is just an over-wrought artistic statement where the designer is throwing caution to the wind by declaring "Knock Me Off. I Don't Care". Nevertheless, I like the idea of designers offering up their fabric bolts for people to have a go at reinterpreting the originals and I guess it's better for these 'knock-offs' to be sort of seeded out from the source.
In other printed jersey news, you probably all know Mary Katrantzou is doing her first collection for Topshop and it's on-sale tomorrow so for once, I'm sort of being on-time with my posts and not posting it ridiculously early or late. Snaps for me. Snaps for me. I'm definitely thinking of buying the first design below seeing as I have the original dress from which the print is derived. Then I'd wear wear them on alternate days for a week, confusing everyone and causing a commotion with giant printed jewel earrings dangling from my nips…
Finally, to complete my mini report of semi-related printed trompe l'oeil garments, monochrome print masters Inside Out popped these A/W 10-11 images over to me which had me hankering for that very delicate kind of transparent silk that frays very nicely. I'm fascinated by how in the printed slips and bra, they've managed to convey the light that shines through the silk together with the movement of this slipper fabric. Oh and whilst an actual quilted leather long-sleeved shirt would be quite an amazing feat (if perhaps a little bit hot to wear…), a printed one equally works.
And that completes the trompe l'oeil round-up. Over to you…. errr….second, non-existent Style Bubble correspondent in my invisible studio.
**EDIT** And back to the tromp l'oeil report we go. Actually this leads onto the next post but I feel it belongs here. At the G-Star showroom, I snapped this dress from the new A/W 10-11 collection which has this mind blowing denim embroidery depicting an aviator jacket and cap….at the show I thought it was just a random denim splotch. Clearly the bright lights were getting to me. I now geddit… back to the yet-to-materialise studio.
The nuances of grey on the last clothes are sublime .
Amazing !
Mary Katrantzou! want want want! I wonder what kind of prices they’ll be…
AMAZING, susie. I can see you in any one of these pieces, or maybe four or five – all at once. 🙂

Before I started reading your blog, I wasn’t really a fan of trompe l’oeil. But oh, that last shirt! So, so awesome!
Those slips look really delicate and pretty. I think it’s got to be the Katrantzou body for me tomorrow.
that green mary katrantzou is superb! so up my street it’s practically left and sauntering down another (though a lovely piece like that would clearly have a jolly good arrogant swagger about it, and why not…)
i’m too safe and (dare i mention the dreaded word) “classic” in my wardrobe choices, i need more graphic prints and more COLOUR, from this point of view you are the direction that my stylistic compass is taking major heed of, so THANK YOU!

would also like to add that the first Katrantzou is about the only opportunity for small-chested ladies like myself to work anything resembling a nipple tassle and so major thumbs up from here! it probably counts as underwear as outerwear too, this is killing a few hundred birds with one stone, what a winner.

I love the bold 60’s influence that runs through these pieces.
o man even the unsewn bag panels are over $300. otherwise i would make that in a heartbeat.
wonder how she’d feel about printing the image out ourselves.. i bet it wouldn’t be ‘knock me off i don’t care’ then.
open source fashion please!! (but this is a good start!)
I’ve never been a fan of printed garments, no matter how well they’re made they always remind me of cheap t-shirts from who knows where made by poor under age kids. But I am a Yes (wo)Man and i will open my mind to new things and spread my wings a little, lets see if i do a post on my new love for all things print.

I have always loved trompe l’oeil it is such a playfull concept!
I really like Cynthia Rowley’s dresses printed on fabric. It’s like when I was a kid we all would were T-shirts with photo-prints of our favorite star to show our fandom. Now you can say I am a fan of this dress or this bag by wearing a photo-print of it.
I really like the printed t shirts – so easy and funky!

Everything involving chemise is good and worthy of beauty-school standards. I just wish a model with Cristine Jenkins’ body should be included here.
Someone should also have used a tshirt printout with a tshirt design on the tshirt design. Like Lewis Caroll’s style.
