It's only been a day but already I'm filled with collections bring to mind a weird, complicated and simmering summer. Not a summer that is just full of fun and games but one that will have some hardship to it. This is me getting deep and meaningful having swigged a bottle of flat coke with a grumbling stomach so you'll have to excuse the language. I'm actually eager to get stuck into a season where I'm going to shows on my own and really looking at shows for myself and on my own terms so if there's over-zealous, over-enthusiastic words, temper them in your head.
Let's get positive with some words from Ran, a designer who is from China and studied/worked in London but is now living in New York. She's starting a label called Baby Ghost soon and here's an embroidered peek..."All my dreams and hope baby ghost..."
Richard Chai Love collection made me want to reach into a box of flesh tights to see whether from that chaos, layers of loose sheerness in muted tones will come out of it. Hah! A remote possibility but in all seriousness, I do love that Chai consistently champions the loose layers in his collections... makes me want to practise a summer mantra of covering up and THINKING cool without resorting to the strip down...
I never got to go to Rachel Comey when I was working for Dazed even though I always end up coveting a shoe, a dress or somthing of her's through various e-shops. Comey always gets to my 'pretty geeky' bone except she never does do straight forward pretty or geeky in her clothes and for S/S 11, it's a balmy summer that is kept neat and prim with pleats that are gathered and tucked at the waist, shirt collars, emphasis on the waist without overdoing the 50s references. The eclectic mix of the prints was the wise icing on top of the thoughtful silhouetted cake....
Goes without saying that of course Comey shoes get a big thumbs up because the heel is decidedly chunky and also brilliantly square...err... the shape, not the adjective...
Good to see Osborn shoes being used in the Mara Hoffman presentation...STILL can't decide which ones to bloody get...
Did have to dorkily ask Valerie of Bleach Black where her bag was from...she says vintage but... REAAAAAALLLY? *raises eyebrows* What is this wondrous vintage store that puts out bags ready-encrusted with rock crystals and stones that one might find in a Natural History Museum giftshop?
Cushnie et Ochs I think again pushed it up another notch this season with a more obvious juxtaposition of the awkward and the tough probably best seen in this halterneck crips shirt paired with a leather kilt. I loved the leather kilts that were worked into a half skirt in with their floral print, which if you look closely, actually features headless body forms, like broken off Roman statues. Oh and a particular sheer number with spotched on sequins is of course making my heart a-flutter... not to be worn on its own of course but *groans* to be layered over something else...
Not quite a shoe snap (as in "Oh SNAP!") but Kaitlyn from BPCM and I did say yes to the Opening Ceremony pony hair treatment of the Dr Marten sandals and Darcie boot... we should have done a walk in unison yesterday...
I got a late introduction to jewellery and accessories label Made Her Think designed by Meredith Kahn via her gypsy-inspired tent/shack that was themed to the rafters... the leather pouches were a personal fave...
Kimberly Ovitz opted out of prim, covered and juxtaposed with a straight off body-con, graphic collection... I was more taken with the eye make-up, prompted by a recent trip to an eyebrow waxing sesh which is making me mildly more interested in that ickle thing called make-up...
