Collaboration is a fruitful weapon in the fashion industry.  It perks disinterested journalists' ears up and however interesting (or uninteresting…) the products of the collab are, there's definitely a story to be pimped out.  The high street chains play this game well.

Some collabs fly under the radar though and slip by most people without making too much noise.  Press day season is in full swing in London (where stylists/journos come and paw over the clothes for the next season in person and have a few canapes whilst they're at it) and here are a few of these almost-silent collabs that have caught my eye.  Get ready for a lot of x's and that's not the kiss variety either.

……………………………………………………………………………………

Pringle of Scotland x Chrissie Morris x Husam el Odeh – Alistair Carr has been making some properly substantial waves at Pringle of Scotland as well as forging some interesting collaborations.  For the second season, Carr works with Chrissie Morris on the footwear and more interestingly, brings in Husam el Odeh to apply a baked bean can wrapper to the heels.  A girl Carr met at school inspired the collection and perhaps she was the sort of grungey gal who ate beans straight from the can.  That's perhaps an overcooked connection.  Either way, it's always good to see metal worker Husam el Odeh in the catwalk limelight.

A.P.C. x Vanessa SewardMeenal Mistry of Style.com quite rightly called this the "cure for the common collaboration" due to the existing friendship between Azzaro's former designer Vanessa Seward and A.P.C.'s Jean Touitou.  Whilst Seward doesn't attempt to break any style boundaries with this charming collection of lam√© and silk dresses, onesies and shirts, it is a refined and surprising turn for A.P.C.  I love the injection of couture fabrics sourced from the archives of Swiss textiles company Soieries Abraham, which might explain why some of these pieces look like vintage Balenciaga or Yves Saint Laurent from the eighties.

Gotta love the use of a short-skort – box pleated shorts at the front and pleated skirt at the back.

The Only Son x Jordan Askill – It seems the majority of these quiet collabs are down to friendships and The Only Son's Au Ekbutr Udomphol and jewellery designer Jordan Askill, despite their geographical distance (Udomphol is based in Bangkok and Askill in London) managed to work on a jewellery collaboration for A/W 12-3.  Askill's distinctive pouncing panther is curved into a partial ring that ends with a scroll pattern.  It's the physical summation of both The Only Son and Jordan Skill's aesthetics in the form of a ring, a bracelet and a pair of earrings.

Jonathan Saunders x Fleet IlyaI didn't have to look at the credits list during Jonathan Saunders A/W 12-3 show to now that the distinctive curved leather belts and visors were the handiwork of Fleet Ilya.  The introduction of the visor category to Fleet Ilya's collection of leather accessories have clearly been a big hit and Jonathan Saunders' geometric print is a welcome addition to the nude leather that Ilya is so fond of.

Lacoste L!ve x Micah Lidberg - Micah Lidberg's site has had me engrossed in a world of jungle animals, fine ink drawings and fantastical landscapes.  Lidberg is a young illustrator from Kansas City and there's something childishly indulgent about the way his illustrations pan out.  Lacoste clearly thought so too and have taken his drawings and applied them to a collection for Lacoste L!ve.  The kid inside me who clings to animal-themed t-shirts and Sanrio stickers is urging me to go for the polo shirts or these belted shirt dress when the collection drops later in the year.

I love collaboration because it allows designers from different way of creating to present what it could be to people. Sometimes it is good like here but it starts to lose its effectiveness because a lot of brands want to do the same things to monopolize the attention on the fact that they can do the same thing as H&M.

  4. I’m surprised Husam doesn’t get invited to/choose to take part in more collaborations of this sort. I’ve loved his jewellery for aaaages but nobody I talk to ever seems to know who he is?! Anyway, I’m a big fan of this tin-can heel – one of the moments when fashion wacky-ness and beauty actually collide head on.

I really like the Micah Lidberg print, though I really loathe Lacoste as their signature polo shirts look so chavy but I might give it a second chance in this wacky print!

It’s true, these collabs fly very much under the radar – which is a shame because they’re actually really interesting and attractive (these Pringle shoes and the Lacoste patterns!). Perhaps if they invited a few more bloggers to their press events…

Thanks for highlighting some interesting pairings, I do like seeing the outcome when equal brands collaborate without having to worry about pleasing the mass market and generating loads of coverage. Loving the A.P.C stuff and the more playful element it’s added to their aesthetic, I guess most High Street brands don’t have a defined style so when they produce a designer collection, it’s less of a true mixture. I posted about my experiences with designer collaborations recently, but I’d love to add some of these to my collection.
