  • Hello Birdy

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim gave a solid reminder with the swathe of extra looks that came storming out at the end of the Opening Ceremony show, that their multi-location store, brand, collaborator and overall cool-as-fuck presence has been in existence since 2002.  That date was marked by the ever pervasive typography heavy sweatshirt and on angular flat caps.  It made you wonder why it took Leon and Lim so long to do show for their own flagship brand.  Then again this was a "Go big or go home" sort of a show.  If you flicked through Instagram for a while on your phone last night (EST time), you might have seen the flood of videos, selfies and schleb spottings (the flood of camera flashes papping away at the Biebster sitting ten seats down from me nearly blinded me) coming in from what was a show of epic proportions.  Witness one of the most explosive starts to any show period I've ever seen, when one by one, hot rides drove into the cavernous Super Pier space by the Hudson River, parked up into chevron formation and model after model emerged to make their rounds.  Every showmanship experience from presenting Kenzo in Paris has rubbed off.  Still, this was a show rooted to New York, from the space, the soundtrack, the afterparty down to the infamous Anselm Bakery cronut in everybody's front row goodie bag.  FYI, verdict?  Even whilst stale, it tasted awesome so I'm trying to imagine what it would taste like fresh.

It said a lot that the audience of circa 2,000 consisting of not just the usual editors, buyers and industry folk but of local kids and OC-enthusiasts were whooping hard and loud.  Louder than any other show thus far.  Opening Ceremony has shown the way forward for curating a cutting edge selection of brands, instilling feverish desire and presenting an alternative view of fashion that has spoken to a new generation of fashion lovers.  Or rather "my" generation (loosely peeps in their teens to early thirties, although not exclusively) who aren't afraid of the new or the unfamiliar.  No surprise then that there was much love as the show swerved in and out of LA drag races in terms of theme.  Too Fast Too Furious.  Then vaguely Japanese florals come sprinkling in mashed up with tarmac textures.  Tokyo Drift.  I half expected Paul Walker to step out of one of the pimped up rides.  In true OC style, cross-cultural pollination was in full force as Lim's Korean background lent itself well to the silhouettes and the prints, but it was their well-versed flair of elevated streetwear that left many in the room making mental personal orders.  More importantly, there was an energetic fist pump of relevance that throbbed throughout the show.  Totes amaze.  Rad.  COOOOOL.  Sick.  And all of that.  As every model took their place to stand beside the fleet of cars and were instructed to linger, the Instas went into overload.  That's the thing with Lim and Leon.  They really do "get" the whole deal.  Old schoolers can lament and huff and puff but these guys are paving a new pathway.  And it's mega fast.

I actually enjoy your photos more than the head-on shots on most websites. I feel like if you’re going to having a show with super cars, the movement of the show should be captured as much as possible. Great post, thanks for sharing!

Leon & Lim never cease to amaze me! I love what they’ve done in this show with retro florals, geometric shapes, and that easy California swag! Its so fun and young, but its not the idiotic kinda young….its the refreshing kinda young. I love the concept of this show and I am looking forward to seeing some of the inspirations that will come from this line.
